Puerto Rico approves 200 MW of additional gas conversions
~800 MW of natural gas conversions approved
Puerto Rico approved an additional 200 MW of natural gas conversions on Friday, March 20, 2026, for San Juan Units 7 and 9, building on the earlier approval to convert 432 MW at Palo Seco Units 3 and 4. These approvals reinforce the island’s commitment to modernizing its power generation infrastructure and advancing its goal of cleaner, more reliable, and more efficient energy.
Another 165 MW of conversions at Cambalache has been conditionally approved and is awaiting final authorization.
The next steps for all projects include securing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permits to complete the conversions and begin operations on natural gas.
