Meet Matthew
Raised in a small town just south of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Matthew LaVergne’s foundation was built on the traditions and values of south Louisiana life. Surrounded by a tight-knit community and a culture deeply connected to the outdoors, he grew up learning lessons that extended far beyond hunting, fishing, and boating. These early experiences shaped his discipline, self-reliance, and respect for both people and the environment - principles that continue to define his leadership today.
At the center of Matthew’s personal influence is his father, Michael R. LaVergne. Time spent together became the backdrop for lessons in accountability, integrity, and structure. Those moments instilled a standard Matthew continues to hold himself to. Professionally, his path was shaped by mentor Steve Robichaux, who recognized his potential early in his offshore career. Through guidance and trust, Steve helped Matthew transition from a technical role into leadership, reinforcing that great leadership starts with investing in people.
Ask those closest to him, and they’ll describe Matthew as selfless, trustworthy, and driven. He carries a deep commitment to putting others first, whether that means mentoring team members offshore or supporting the growth of those around him. “For me, success is not just personal achievement, but seeing others grow, succeed, and reach their full potential” he shares. That mindset is what motivates him every day.
Matthew’s career path reflects both initiative and determination. After starting as an HVAC technician onshore, he became curious about offshore opportunities and pursued them independently. He invested in his own training, completed offshore certifications, and secured his first role. That decision marked the beginning of a career defined by growth, resilience, and leadership.
Today, Matthew serves as an Offshore Installation Manager at NFE’s FLNG1 offshore facility in Altamira, Mexico. In this role, he is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the facility, overseeing everything from process safety and asset performance to regulatory compliance. He leads emergency response efforts and ensures preparedness in high-risk environments. Beyond operations, he fosters a culture rooted in safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
What Matthew values most about New Fortress Energy is its commitment to empowering those on the front lines. “NFE’s’ empowerment not only strengthens operational results but also builds a more cohesive and high-performing team” Matthew shares. By trusting site-based teams to make decisions and contribute their expertise, the company creates a culture of ownership and continuous improvement. For Matthew, this approach strengthens both performance and team cohesion.
At the core of everything Matthew does is a simple but powerful source of energy: seeing others succeed. Whether it’s his team operating safely and confidently offshore or his family thriving at home, those moments fuel his drive and reinforce his purpose. Through discipline and a people-first mindset, Matthew LaVergne continues to lead with impact and positive energy both on and offshore.
