What are Mexico LNG projects, and why do they matter?
Fast, affordable, cleaner energy— that’s what we’re delivering through our Mexico LNG projects. We’re proud to be developing and operating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities that produce, transport, and distribute natural gas throughout the country.
By replacing oil-based fuels with LNG, we’re helping Mexico transition to more reliable, lower-emission energy. From our La Paz terminal in Baja California Sur, to our Altamira Fast LNG liquefier off the Gulf Coast, these projects are helping revitalize the nation’s energy infrastructure, strengthen local economies, and reduce environmental impact.
Our Mexico LNG project, La Paz LNG: delivering cleaner energy to Baja California Sur
Our journey began in 2018, when New Fortress Energy launched detailed marine and land studies to explore LNG potential in Mexico. That led to the commissioning of our La Paz LNG terminal in Baja California Sur in 2021.
This terminal uses our proprietary ISOFlex system, which loads LNG from carrier vessels into ISO containers for flexible, affordable distribution, especially in remote or underserved areas. We also developed a 135-megawatt gas-fired power plant which delivers consistent electricity to the region that suffers from chronic outages, reduces the community’s reliance on fuel oil, and has been central in helping meet the growing power demand.
Our Mexico LNG project, Altamira LNG and Fast LNG 1: a modular offshore breakthrough
Offshore of Mexico’s Gulf Coast, we’ve introduced our innovative Fast LNG technology. In 2024, we commissioned Fast LNG 1, a modular, offshore liquefaction terminal located near Altamira.
The project includes three offshore rigs:
- Pioneer I – Gas treatment
- Pioneer II – Liquefaction
- Pioneer III – Utilities and accommodations
Fast LNG 1 connects to the Sur de Texas–Tuxpan pipeline and has a production capacity of 1.4 million tons per year. The facility is now exporting LNG to global markets and reinforcing Mexico’s role in international energy supply.

New Fortress Energy has played a central role in launching, scaling, and innovating Mexico LNG projects since 2018. By applying cutting-edge technologies like ISOFlex and Fast LNG and building partnerships with local and national leaders, NFE has turned early studies into real-world solutions that are making a national and global impact.
