A more
promising future

While five engineering students at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez (UPRM) are still working on a challenging curriculum, their loads are now a little lighter. As recipients of the first New Fortress Energy emPOWER Puerto Rico scholarships awarded at UPRM, these bright scholars have each been granted $5,000 toward their tuition and academic expenses.

UPRM Scholars

We established the NFE emPOWER Puerto Rico scholarship to help aspiring engineers excel and become leaders in the fields of technology and energy innovation. To be considered, students must be pursuing undergraduate degrees in electrical, industrial, mechanical, computer, civil, or biomedical engineering. Based on academic excellence, financial need, community service, and proven leadership, the 2021-22 UPRM scholarship recipients are Kevin Caleb Caraballo Irizarry, Miguel A. de Jesús Soto, Adriana Danielle Kleshick Segarra, Penélope O. Nieves Colón, and Kevin W. Rodríguez García.

"It is an honor to be part of this alliance with New Fortress Energy, which is, without a doubt, an ally of education, especially in cutting-edge issues with global relevance such as the innovation in technology and energy,” said Dr. Agustín Rullán Toro, Chancellor of University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. “With these scholarships, our students are not only afforded a better opportunity to develop their careers, but also a more promising future as industry leaders and engineering professionals. We appreciate the support of New Fortress Energy for trusting in the talent of our students and the educational excellence of our institution."

We’re excited to kick-off our UPRM partnership and help empower talented students at UPRM and throughout the communities where we operate. Since 2019, we have awarded 169 college scholarships, provided financial aid to more than 3,800 children, and supplied backpacks and school supplies to more than 6,350 students in Puerto Rico and Jamaica. As we work to provide access to cleaner, more affordable energy, we’re also proud to provide access to the resources the next generation of leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs need create their own positive energy!
