Meet Sasha

Sasha Lewis spent her childhood tinkering with anything she could find, taking things apart just to see how they worked and then put them back together again. Today, Sasha is tinkering with bigger toys as one of the youngest project engineers at New Fortress Energy (NFE).

In 2018, during her final year at The University of the West Indies, the electronic engineering major earned a scholarship from NFE, which then hired her just before her graduation.

“The scholarship came at the right time and allowed me to focus on my academics,” Sasha recalls. “I want to make a lasting and positive impact on my country, so choosing to work with New Fortress was a no-brainer. For the first time in years, the Jamaican economy has recorded growth, and one of the contributing factors that the Prime Minister has mentioned is the introduction of natural gas as a fuel source. To further the benefits, this fuel has significantly reduced our carbon footprint, supporting sustainable development. Transitioning to natural gas is a significant development for Jamaica, and I’m proud to be part of the team that is writing such an important history.”

At NFE, she is ensuring the timely, cost-effective, and compliant development and completion of six small-scale projects in Jamaica.

“A typical day at NFE entails an exciting office-to-field mixture,” she says. “When I’m in the office, I procure the project requirements, maintain our project database, control project costs, handle scheduling. A regular day on-site means that I’m monitoring site activity and managing contractors to ensure that all deadlines are met. There is never a week where I am certain what it will entail in entirety, and that is exhilarating. This, coupled with the ability to travel and experience different cultures, is what I like most about working at NFE. It has inspired me to pursue my M.B.A. degree to fortify my ability to transform the world, one project at a time. I would also love to start my own bakery – and who knows, maybe it will be fueled by natural gas!”

Sasha navigates life on her own terms, choosing to set her own standards for greatness rather than striving to meet the benchmarks set by others’ successes.

“The idea of a role model makes us believe that our greatness must be equivalent to that of someone else’s,” she says, “In the 21st century, when everything is considered ‘goals’, it’s good to be cognizant of our own greatness. We are our greatest role models as we embrace what builds our character. As long as we put in the hard work, believe in ourselves, and passionately go for what we want, then the sky is the limit.”
