We recently awarded the second consecutive year of our emPOWER Puerto Rico scholarships to 10 electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering undergraduate students from the Polytechnic University in Puerto Rico (PUPR). The students were chosen based on having an academic index of 3.0 or higher, demonstrating financial need, participating in community activities, and exhibiting leadership. Each of the following students received a $5,000 academic scholarship to support their educational journey: Ana R. Rodríguez López, Gabriel J. Cheverez Rodríguez, Angélica C. Soto Pomales, Gustavo J. Albelo Rivera, Alberto E. Rivera Arroyo, Julimar Colón Montañez, Jailene J. Alvarado Acevedo, Josué E. Ortíz Acevedo, Elvin A. Flores Arroyo, and Jan M. Ocasio Sánchez.
Last year, four PUPR students received the emPOWER scholarship, plus a $500 stipend to help them acquire technical equipment or internet services to facilitate their remote learning during the pandemic. New Fortress Energy has provided $72,000 in scholarships and financial aid to PUPR students – so far.
“We are very grateful to New Fortress Energy for supporting our university's engineering students,” said Ernesto Vázquez Barquet, PUPR president. “This is a great example of what private companies can contribute to the benefit of the professionals of the future that we need so much for the development of our Island.”
