Making education more attractive and fun for kids in Puerto Sandino

OUR FOUNDATION

Empowering Nicaragua’s youth

As part of our commitment to power the world with positive energy, we’re especially proud to support the people and communities where we operate. All students deserve an environment conducive to learning, and on May 20, 2022, we were thrilled to be able to help NicaPhoto provide that for kids at the San Rafael Elementary School in Puerto Sandino, Nicaragua. NicaPhoto is a comprehensive youth development program that brings educational support, art, and personal development opportunities to empower disadvantaged children and their families in the country’s poorest barrios.

Several of our team members rolled up their sleeves to help NicaPhoto clean up the exterior of the school, which involved planting 60 coconut, citrus, mango, and avocado trees; building herb boxes; sprucing up the garden area; and trimming plants and trees around the center courtyard. Our New Fortress Energy volunteers included Juan Escalante, Terminal Manager; Julio Matus, Port Facility Security Officer; Cirsthiam Sevilla, Assistant Project Manager; Henry Martin Tapia, Projects Controls; Harvey Aburto, Engineer Coordinator; Jaime Parra, Engineer Coordinator; and Marco Corea, Assistant Terminal Manager.

Of course, learning doesn’t stop when school’s over, and we’re also excited to be able to provide books, computers, crafting materials, and snacks for NicaPhoto’s twice-a-month afterschool programs at San Rafael. One session in April brought 60 students, from fourth to sixth grade, together to participate in a martial arts class, plant a garden, and practice communication skills. Future activities will include robotics, computer literacy, dance, reading groups, and photographer workshops, as well as Girls and Boys Club talking groups around topics such as health and nutrition.

We’re always inspired by the work of partners such as NicaPhoto, and it’s gratifying to be able to help them spread positive energy to make the world a brighter place, especially for bright young students such as these.
