NFE Foundation awards scholarships to 20 Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico students

Our San Juan facility recently hosted nearly two dozen remarkable students from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico for an award ceremony celebrating their New Fortress Energy (NFE) Foundation emPOWER Puerto Rico scholarships. These 20 engineering students each received $5,000 for tuition and academic expenses, and they will have the opportunity to connect with NFE employees and apply for NFE internship positions next summer.

“We are very grateful to New Fortress Energy for supporting our university's engineering students with the help they need to complete their high school studies for three years in a row,” said Ernesto Vázquez Barquet, president of the Polytechnic University. “This is a great example of what private companies can contribute to the benefit of the professionals of the future that we need so much for the development of our Island.”

We established our NFE emPOWER Puerto Rico scholarship in 2019 to help aspiring electrical, mechanical, and civil engineers excel and become leaders in the fields of technology and energy innovation. Criteria include academic standing, financial need, community service, and proven leadership. In the first year, we awarded 4 scholarships valued at $5,000 each in addition to a $500 stipend that could be used towards purchasing an online leaning device for remote learning during the pandemic. Last year, 10 students each were granted $5,000. This year, our goal was 15 students, but after completing our candidate interviews, we were proud to extend scholarships to all 20 applicants.
