Powering a brighter future for
Baja California Sur with CFE

LNG Case Study

Cleaner, smarter operations for more reliable energy

As Mexico’s state-owned electric utility, the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) generates, transmits, distributes, and supplies electricity nationwide. Through CFEnergia, it also manages fuel commercial agreements to modernize and decarbonize the country’s energy grid.

NFE customer

In the Baja California Sur region, high fuel costs and carbon-intensive power generation placed a significant financial and environmental strain on the region’s infrastructure and environment. That’s why we stepped in with an innovative solution to deliver cleaner and more affordable energy for the area’s more than 800,000 residents.

We partnered with CFE to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to two gas turbines at the Punta Prieta power plant and one turbine at the Coromuel power plant, using our trucking and proprietary ISOFlex delivery systems. Each site includes a gas-fired vaporizer and a 15,000-gallon buffer tank, supporting approximately 100 megawatts of power. Combined, the sites consume approximately 26,000 gallons of LNG per day.

In just five months, we turned the entire system online. Fuel costs were reduced by 69%, resulting in approximately $60 million in annual savings. Carbon emissions were reduced by 38%, equivalent to planting 707,000 trees or taking 9,800 cars off the road each year.

Today, this partnership is driving energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and strengthening infrastructure in a community that needs reliable power more than ever. Because for NFE, it’s not just about keeping the lights on— it’s about powering the way to a more sustainable, more resilient tomorrow.
